1. Minimal Is In
Strip away heavy window coverings and replace with simple shades. One path to less fabric is using an upholstered cornice, says Sue Pelley, national spokesperson for Interiors by Decorating Den, or a flap valance like the Ace three-piece set from Swags Galore.

2. Lighten Up
Natural light in the kitchen is essential. “Pleated shades offer a privacy treatment and still allow plenty of light,” says Pelley.

Just one example of an attractive pleated shade is the Smith + Noble version, available in tones ranging from White to Sky Blue, in subtle stripes and a tropical-looking pattern. It even comes in versions suitable for skylights or arched windows.

3. Pick Current Colors
If you’re using fabric, make sure it’s in a contemporary tone.

“The terra cotta shades are very ‘in’ mixed with greens, blacks and golds,” says Pelley. “You can also mix cotton fabric prints, either within a treatment or coordinating a print in the valance or cornice with another print on the cushion seats or place mats.”

If your kitchen is particularly tiny, then light, cool colors can make it look larger and brighter, while dark, warm colors can make an oversized kitchen more inviting.

4. Try Some Texture
Another hot trend is Roman shades made of rattan, bamboo or other natural fibers, says Pelley: “They add visual interest with their texture, but still roll up smoothly like the Roman shades of old.”

5. Soften Direct Light
Too much direct sunlight is also an issue in kitchens, says Pelley, since it makes it hot and unpleasant to work in. Simple wood blinds or woven wood shades, like the Provenance sold by Hunter Douglas, will filter the light without looking too heavy.

6. Consider Some Curves
“There are typically lots of straight lines in the kitchen — the cabinets, the appliances, the counters —everything is straight or square,” says Pelley. “It’s a good idea to add a window treatment with soft curves to open the space up, especially in a small kitchen.”

Arching a valance is a good option, particularly over the sink. Other options include a curved cornice, a box-pleated valance with a curved line along the bottom or a London Shade from Smith + Noble that is nearly flat at the top but falls from inverted pleats to gentle swags along the bottom, with wings at either side.

Carpet Testing 101

Guarding His Shagtastic Carpet Sample

Guarding His Shagtastic Carpet Sample

Sure he looks innocent, but he’s been testing this little square of carpet to the best of his abilities for the last 3 months (before he was even strong enough to pick it up himself) and, so far, the carpet has withstood all the abuse he can dish out!  This includes but is not limited to:  throwing, shaking, gnawing, dragging, sleeping and drooling.  To this day it has not unraveled, discolored, or lost its full plushy texture.

For an entertaining video of one such activity, check out our facebook page:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Boise-ID/Neefs-Carpet-One/55693435841?ref=nf

So fear not, shag carpet lovers!  Even if you have dogs and children who perform cruel and unusual punishments to your flooring, you really can have the thick luxurious carpet you’ve been dreaming of.  Bonus:  Carpet is easily bound to any size area rug that fits your room!

Ol’ Miserly Melvin

February 19, 2010

We received a Christmas gift a couple years ago that is still displayed here in our store because it is so true! ” The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten.”

Would you rather pay a super low price for something, but then have to put up with its poor performance (staining, unraveling, chipping, fading…) or even replace it a few short years later?  Or would you rather not have to worry about those stains and traffic patterns because, frankly, your flooring kicks butt?  You’ve actually saved yourself time and money (not to mention a few headaches) by not having to replace your floor again.

Value is in the eye of the beholder.  I know what my miser of a grandpa would choose, but then he was raised in the era of the Great Depression.  He’s happier than a live turkey the day after Thanksgiving wearing his ratty, stained, and ugly as sin orange felt golf hat because he found it laying in a parking lot 18 years ago.  But that’s not entirely his fault;  he loves anything orange (Go Beavers!) and anything free.  He also never replaced the carpet in 2 out of the 3 bedrooms in his house since it was built in 1960.  Classic Mel.

The Bitterness of low quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten.

The bitterness of low quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten.

If you don’t care for looks or quality, then by all means, be like Melvin and get the cheapest (and often ugliest, by default) flooring you can find.  But most of us do care a bit about comfort, quality, and longevity.  We certainly carry all ends of the spectrum here, but finding the most practical floor to fit your lifestyle and, ultimately, saving you money is what we specialize in.

Bonus gifts.

Mohawk Using Post-Consumer Plastic in Everstrand

Dalton, GA, Nov. 2, 2009–Mohawk said it has developed technology which allows the use of post-consumer recycled content in its EverStrand BCF fiber styles.

Effective immediately, all of Mohawk EverStrand BCF fibers will include post-consumer recycled content from plastic bottles. Additionally, Mohawk will provide certification letters to document recycled content for all EverStrand carpet styles.

“This provides retailers with the advantage of having a green benefit associated with all Mohawk EverStrand products,” said Jenny Cross, Mohawk’s director of sustainability.

David Duncan, Mohawk’s vice president of marketing, said new EverStrand filament styles are being introduced that will contain the new fiber.

The company said it plans to further develop its EverStrand BCF technology to include more post consumer recycled content.

Mohawk said it has recycled more than 24 billion soft drink bottles for use in carpet fiber, and continues recycling more than 3 billion bottles each year.
